Wolf Park's workshops offer once-in-a-lifetime experiential learning opportunities in a variety of fields, including animal behavior, life coaching, and art. Our workshops often incorporate Wolf Park staff and animal ambassadors to provide a unique, multidisciplinary experience.

“Winter Wolves Watercolor Workshop” with Rusty Harden

Wolf Park and the Rusty Harden Studio are offering a guided watercolor class online featuring a Wolf Pair in a Winter Scene. Learn how to capture the wildlife and the nature you love. The workshop focus is on developing skills and building confidence while teaching the techniques that will improve the skills of a beginner and the non confident artist.

Rusty Harden’s studio will provide an introduction of supplies as well as the basics of observing, sketching and using a limited watercolor palette. She will demonstrate the fundamentals of watercolor and the specific techniques to create light and depth in your paintings. Step by step Rusty will break down in phases how you can create the  painting. The workshop will focus on how to create paintings that feel finished and interesting but also quick and spontaneous without feeling rushed. Throughout the workshop artists will practice on what to draw and what to leave out, how to maximize the power of every stroke that you make and what tools to use.

You’ll also “meet” one of Wolf Park’s ambassador wolves during the workshop and have an opportunity to ask questions and learn how Wolf Park staff cares for our wolves.

Workshop will cover the following:

  • Observation: How to see and simplify to capture an image.
  • Sketching Skills: Quick and easy how to on sketching.
  • Develop: Paintings through composition and value with a limited watercolor palette.
  • The workshop will include general instruction on the use of perspective, value, creating interest through lost and found edges, color temperature, and color mixing.

Supply List Needed (Artists are encouraged to use the available watercolor supplies on hand):

Suggested supplies at minimum are a pencil, pen, eraser, expired gift card (hard plastic), #4 round watercolor brush, water container, paper towels, masking tape, small spray bottle, table salt, clip board, 9 x12 Arches cold press 140lbs watercolor pad preferred or basic watercolor paper, will work with each individual attendee’s watercolor palette. Suggested watercolors either tubes or pans in the following colors: Winsor Newton: Winsor red, winsor yellow, new gamboge, cobalt blue. Holbein Watercolor: Opera Pink. Grumbacher Academy: violet, rose madder, burnt sienna, turquoise and indigo.

Learning how to use your watercolors gives you the opportunity to explore and document the world around you. To capture a moment, the atmosphere and create a deeper connection to the environment. Anyone can snap a photo. After the workshop, you’ll be equipped with the skills and knowledge to continue your passion for watercolor.


Rusty Harden has been a professional artist and instructor for over twenty years. Teaching in-person and online art classes from her Tipp City, Ohio studio in a variety of mediums. As an instructor, gallery owner, published author, associate documentary producer, and active volunteer she demonstrates that her passion is about expression of self and speaking the truth through art.

As owner and operator of Rusty Harden Studio she saw the devastating impact Covid-19 had on family, friends and her art students during the shut down. She immediately implemented an outreach art program through Facebook by providing weekly tutorials. Realizing the chaos of Covid was here to stay she quickly developed multiple free online class and studio time for her in-person students on Zoom. Soon she realized art was an international language that crossed all time zones. Her outreach did not go unnoticed. Multiple news outlets recognized how she reached out to the world and provided relief for adults and children through art. She brought thousands of strangers together from all walks life to share their joy of art. Now those strangers are friends and a community that gathers every week to create in a variety of mediums.

Rusty’s endeavors over the past year have included being a featured artist within the CBS “Follow the Sun 2022” calendar for the Sunday Morning television program, Associate Producer for the award winning documentary “The Artist – Documentary”, Artist in Residence for Boonshoft Museum of Discovery/SunWatch, online/in-person demos and workshops for Western Ohio Watercolor Society, TriArts of Dayton, Ohio, Tipp City Arts Council, Greenville Art Guild and Derwent Ambassador creating online demos and YouTube videos. Honored by Dayton Society of Artists to create a work of art depicting Carillon Park eagles of Dayton, Ohio. Commissioned murals for libraries and a memory care center. Multiple community outreach & fundraising events for non profit organizations such as: Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, Tri-County Board of Mental Health “Art of Recovery”, public memorial exhibit for the 2019 Dayton Mass Shooting, Pink Ribbon Girls, outreach and fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Associations.

A twenty year journey to learn her craft, find her voice, and create the connections.


Dates, Cost, and Logistics

This workshop will be hosted on Wolf Park’s zoom platform. A zoom link and instructions will be provided to participants in a welcome packet. The zoom session will be recorded and will be available to participants for 2 weeks after each session concludes. The total cost of the workshop is $30. The workshop session will be on October 01 from 1:00-4:00pm EST.


Refund policy

Cancellations occurring greater than 10 days prior to the seminar can apply 75% of the registration fee to another seminar. Arrangements for transfer must occur by 12/31/22. If arrangements do not occur, your fee will be considered a tax-deductible donation. No refunds if cancellation occurs less than 10 days prior to the seminar. Only if the seminar is canceled by Wolf Park will the fee be refunded.
